What I Eat To Detox My Body

by Manny Aragon

Detox is as natural a process as eating. In a general sense, when health experts talk about detox they are generally referring to a gut cleansing process and a stage I/II liver detox. They go together after all. So, when I speak about the detoxification process, I too am speaking about cleaning the gut, flushing the liver properly so that the toxins from the liver are expelled into the gut and then removing the toxins from the gut.

So often folks speak about foods that detox the body like bitter greens (liver) and citrus (oranges and tangerines), and so forth. This is only part of the story. This is because the way your liver oxidizes toxins can sometimes make them more toxic. Hence you need to prepare your body properly and use phase I promoting foods as well as phase II promoting foods to move the toxins out of the body ASAP.

Phase II detoxification fastens the toxins transformed in Phase I detoxification to bile so that they can be excreted through the liver and gall bladder into the intestine. After that, if there is not proper adsorption of the toxins to a food that binds them, the toxins will simply be reabsorbed into the body by the gut. The elimination phase is generally termed “drainage”.

Foods that promote  Phase I detoxification are foods from the cruciferous family (broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, etc) amongst others. Foods that promote Phase II detoxification are foods like oranges, tangerines, Turmeric, onions and others. Foods that promote drainage are beets, asparagus, avocado, and more.
